Observe how long the pitting is present after the release of indentation depth and pressuredecides and grade it subjectively;
e.g. renal edema, cardiac edema, etc.
Shows 4 stages:

Stage I, ,mild depression, slight identation(2mm), no obvious swell;
Stage II, moderate depression, identation (4mm) disappear rapidly;
Stage III, deep depression, identation (6mm) lasts for a while only, small swell area;
Stage IV, severe depression, identation (8mm) lasts for a long time, very large swell area.
